Antananarivo means "City of the Thousand", because it has been said that a thousand warriors protected it. In 1895, when the French invaded Madagascar, their history centred around the royal palace or "Rova". Formerly an independent kingdom, Madagascar became a French colony in 1886, but regained its independence in 1960. During 1992-93, free presidential and National Assembly elections were held, ending 17 years of single-party rule.

Antsirabé
is the second biggest city in Central Madagascar, and was established as a spa-town during colonial times. It is currently the agricultural and industrial centre of Madagascar. Fianarantsoa is the city of the Belitsio tribe, and its high climate offers respite from the heat. While its hills make for tiring walking, they offer a very picturesque location. Andasibe offers a gateway to the Andasibe Mantadia National Park, Central Madagascar's largest and most visited.
