Antananarivo hotels and tours

Enjoy your trip to Antananarivo & Central Madagascar!

Central Madagascar includes the country's capital and largest city, Antananarivo, as well as a number of other places of interest for visitors, including Antsirabe, Andasibe and Fianarantsoa. This region offers cultural cities, bustling markets, great Antananarivo hotels, stunning lakes and diverse national parks as some of its main attractions. Central Madagascar offers some of the country's biggest cities and best attractions!

During you stay in Antananarivo, do not miss to make some trip in Antsirabe. Antsirabe (ant-sira-bay) is the third largest city on the island of Madagascar. In 1872, a Norwegian missionary discovered its cool climate, serene environs and therapeutic thermal springs and set up a retreat here. Very soon the French, who were regular visitors to Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar, found Antsirabe to be the ideal getaway from the din and bustle of Antananarivo.

Spending some time in Antananarivo and the region of Central Madagascar will let you experience typical Malagasy culture.

There is a lot to see and do in Antananarivo and Central Madagascar. The rich and fascinating history and culture of the "Merina" people of Madgascar can be best appreciated in tourist attractions such as the museum and the Royal Palace, or "Rova". A great way to see the sights is on a tour in Antananarivo and Central Madagascar.

Finding a place to stay in Antananarivo and nearby town of Andasibe for all budgets and tastes is easy. There are many hotels in Antananarivo and Central Madagascar that offer great value for money. Alternatively, if you'd like to select your hotel in Antananarivo or Central Madagascar based upon its location, take a look at our map, and select your Antananarivo hotel from there. And while in Madagascar, why not visit some other fascinating destinations, such as Antsirabe, Nosy Be or Fort Dauphin? Or you could include some other great African places like Tanzania, Kenya, Swaziland, or South Africa.

Antananarivo means "City of the Thousand", because it has been said that a thousand warriors protected it. In 1895, when the French invaded Madagascar, their history centred around the royal palace or "Rova". Formerly an independent kingdom, Madagascar became a French colony in 1886, but regained its independence in 1960. During 1992-93, free presidential and National Assembly elections were held, ending 17 years of single-party rule.

Antsirabe
is the second biggest city in Central Madagascar, and was established as a spa-town during colonial times. It is currently the agricultural and industrial centre of Madagascar. Fianarantsoa is the city of the Betsileo tribe, and its high climate offers respite from the heat. While its hills make for tiring walking, they offer a very picturesque location. Andasibe offers a gateway to the Andasibe Mantadia National Park, Central Madagascar's largest and most visited.
